Pohjan Voima plans wind farm in Rovaniemi

Electricity production will commence in 2030 at the earliest.

Pohjan Voima is initiating project planning for wind turbines in Rovaniemi. The Rovaniemi City Council will decide on the commencement of the component master plan at its meeting on Monday, January 20, 2025.

The goal is to build 10–15 wind turbines in the Kilvenaava area, which is located approximately 35 kilometers south of Rovaniemi’s center. The wind farm’s nominal power will be 80–120 MW, and it will be specified depending on the size of the turbines.

“The City of Rovaniemi’s study has identified Kilvenaapa as a potential area for wind power. Now, the EIA and zoning processes will commence, where the impacts on people and nature will be examined as accurately as possible,” says Tomi Mäkipelto, CEO of Pohjan Voima.

Pohjan Voima will organize a discussion event for residents of nearby areas, where the project will be explained in more detail. The event will be held online in February, and a link to it can be found on the project website, kilvenaapa.fi.

“It is important to us that the impacts of the wind farm on the landscape, the environment, and reindeer herding are thoroughly investigated. In these discussions, we need the perspectives and cooperation of local residents,””says Mäkipelto.

The exact number and location of the wind turbines will be determined during the EIA and zoning process. Various options for electricity transmission routes are being mapped out. At the same time, the feasibility of constructing a battery storage facility for electricity in the project area is being explored. Wind power production will begin no earlier than 2030. The project has received approval from the Finnish Defence Forces.

The wind farm is being planned in close cooperation with Davvi Metsä, a major landowner in the Kilvenaava area. This project combines Pohjan Voima’s expertise in renewable energy with Davvi Metsä’s local insights and responsible use of forest and natural resources.
