Keminmaa 125 MW battery storage project advances to construction phase

Independent asset manager Luxcara and Pohjan Voima have agreed on the sale of the Keminmaa battery storage project. Construction will begin during 2026.

Pohjan Voima has sold the Keminmaa battery energy storage system (BESS) project to funds managed by German independent asset manager Luxcara. The BESS project is sold to the buyer as ready-to-build.

The battery storage facility is located in the Mykkä area, approximately 10 kilometres north of the Keminmaa municipal centre. It has a nominal capacity of 125 MW and will be one of the largest battery storage facilities in Finland upon completion. The BESS will be connected to the national grid via an adjacent Fingrid substation and can be commissioned on a fast timeline.

Construction will begin during 2026. Pohjan Voima will continue to provide certain project development services during the construction phase. The Keminmaa BESS is the second Pohjan Voima battery storage project to advance to the construction phase within a year.

“We have succeeded in developing a highly competitive portfolio of ready-to-build battery storage projects that benefit from, among other things, fast grid connectivity and the government’s new clean transition tax credit,” says Tomi Mäkipelto, CEO at Pohjan Voima.

Luxcara is a leading independent asset manager focused on the clean energy transition, headquartered in Hamburg. The funds managed by Luxcara own a broad portfolio of clean energy investments across Europe.
