The municipality will now decide on initiation of zoning, and a public information event will be held shortly after the decision.

Energy company Pohjan Voima is developing a data centre project in Petäjävesi in partnership with forest and natural capital company Finsilva. The preliminary area identified for the project covers approximately 100 hectares, and the final size of the project will be determined through further studies. The entire project area is owned by Finsilva and is currently used for commercial forestry.

A zoning initiative has been submitted to the municipality of Petäjävesi. Following the municipality’s decision to launch the zoning process, an extensive environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure will be carried out. The studies will examine, among other things, the area’s ecological values and the project’s impacts on the surrounding environment. Engagement of local residents is an integral part of the process.

“We are at an early stage of the project. The zoning process and environmental impact assessment will help establish whether the project is suitable for this location and under what preconditions. The permitting processes will also give local residents an opportunity to share their views regarding what should be taken into account in the planning,” says Tomi Mäkipelto, CEO of Pohjan Voima.

A 110 kV transmission line runs through the area, and Fingrid’s Petäjävesi substation is located nearby. Grid connection design will be further determined during project planning.

Mäkipelto emphasises the importance of public debate about data centres. He welcomes open discussion and questions about the Metsonmäki project from the outset.

“It is understandable that people are concerned about how much electricity data centres consume and how this affects electricity prices. Our aim is to design and deliver the project in the most sustainable way possible for the power system. Pohjan Voima is developing the Lehmikorpi wind farm in the same grid area, which means we can also bring new electricity generation to the area.”

The studies carried out during the permitting phase will clarify the project’s final scope. The construction schedule will also be determined as planning progresses. If the zoning and permitting processes proceed as planned, the zoning plan enabling construction of the data centre could be submitted to the municipal council for approval in late 2027.

The data centre project has potential to be a significant development for the municipality of Petäjävesi. It would generate property tax revenue for the municipality, create jobs and open up new business opportunities, particularly during construction. The benefits and impacts will be assessed in greater detail as planning progresses.

“We want to establish whether this area, currently used for commercial forestry, could be suitable for a data centre project. We have worked closely with Pohjan Voima on developing energy projects for several years. At this stage, we want to explore the site’s potential and listen carefully to local residents. The time for decisions is later, once all the necessary studies have been completed,” says Juha Hakkarainen, CEO of Finsilva.

Pohjan Voima and Finsilva will hold a public information event in Petäjävesi shortly after the municipality has approved the zoning initiative. The date and venue will be announced separately.

CONTACT

Tomi Mäkipelto
CEO, Pohjan Voima
050 370 4092
tomi.makipelto@pohjanvoima.fi

Juha Hakkarainen
CEO, Finsilva
0400 870 867
juha.hakkarainen@finsilva.fi

Pohjan Voima develops and builds energy parks, battery energy storage systems and data centres.
